Director, Equipment Engineering

The Director of Equipment Engineering will be responsible for installation and maintenance of all production tooling in Daystar’s photovoltaic module factory. The candidate must have at least 10 years of hands-on experience in successful specification, assembly, installation, and optimization of thin-film vacuum systems and/or wet chemistry systems used by semiconductor, solar, hard disk or flat panel display industries. The candidate must have a proven track record and specific technical expertise over a wide range of engineering disciplines required by complex fabrication systems. The candidate must possess excellent engineering management skills, both in building and managing a highly effective engineering team.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Direct activities of the Coater Assembly, Systems Engineering, and Equipment Maintenance teams:
• Lead equipment assembly, start-up, and production ramp activities for new factory.
• Specification of Factory Tool Sets.
• Maintenance responsibilities for production equipment in support of plant requirements for yield, uptime, and throughput.
• Work with the executive management team to set plans for achieving tactical and strategic goals and position the equipment engineering effort to take a principal role in supporting those goals.
• Work with Manufacturing Engineers so that design for manufacturability issues are implemented on a continual basis and applied to existing and future products.
• Recommend & implement appropriate changes in fabrication tools and processes to improve the overall product performance and manufacturing cost.
• Work with technology development and manufacturing teams to provide inputs which will streamline the technology development and transfer to manufacturing so that product development efforts address the essential requirements to ensure timely transition to volume manufacturing.
• Lead teams in productivity improvement projects.

Qualifications:

Systems Engineering Manager

The Systems Engineering Manger will provide tool integration leadership in the creation and deployment of DayStar’s photovoltaic module factory. This senior position leads, develops, and executes system engineering projects of substantial scope and complexity. The primary focus of the position is to identify and troubleshoot technical problems, lead and/or execute mission-critical projects, and act as the primary interface with design, automation, and process engineers regarding factory start-up activities.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Work with design and development engineers to create factory tool specifications.
• Apply system engineering best practices and concepts to integrate a wide variety of factory tool sets
• Champion ongoing engineering design improvements, and supervise qualification tests.
• Review system engineering test results and influence change in adjusting design direction as necessary.
• Lead and/or develop and execute, as well as problem identification and troubleshooting unusually complex projects having a substantial mix of electrical, mechanical, and software design, which are leading edge of system functionality or technology.
• Support System Integration during the start up of the factory production line.

Qualifications:

Equipment Maintenance Manager

The Equipment Maintenance Manger will build a group of engineers and technicians to support operation of DayStar’s photovoltaic module factory. Apply your personnel management skills, electro-mechanical equipment expertise, and demonstrated manufacturing track record to meet factory productivity goals.

Primary Responsibilities:

Factory Start-up

• Support equipment startup and production ramp schedules for the new factory.
• Own vacuum sputter equipment assembly responsibilities.
• Coordinate new equipment installation in close partnership with the facilities team and equipment vendors.
• Execute acceptance test procedures (ATPs) with equipment vendors to insure compliance to equipment specifications and installation schedules.

Equipment Management

• Support and maintain production equipment to meet the ongoing production plan requirements for yield, uptime, and throughput.
• Ownership of tool preventative maintenance specifications
• Management of troubleshooting activities, regular monitoring of tool and process performance, defect analysis and reduction.
• Working with cross functional teams to solve technical process and defects issues.
• Use statistical methods, SPC and TPM to establish maintenance intervals.

Continuous Improvement

• Drive continuous improvements in safety, efficiency, yield, cost, and manufacturability.
• Generate continuous improvement projects to improve equipment metrics for yield, up time and throughput.

Production Support

• Insure that all engineering and manufacturing documentation is in place, controlled and maintained.
• Provide training to Engineers, Engineering Technicians and Operators on equipment operations, maintenance, troubleshooting and SPC.
• Define the preventive maintenance procedures, documents and spares.
• Assist with the documentation of drawings, manuals and procedures.

MES Project Manager

Process Engineer

This position will be responsible for the exploration and confirmation of high vacuum processes for solar cell production.  The candidate’s contributions will be expected to be exceptionally broad in scope; the ideal candidate will possess both a wide-range of skills and the willingness and energy to participate in the on-going definition of this position and of the company itself.

The position may require travel to inspect and support equipment.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Conduct experiments on R&D tools to evaluate new processes and process concepts
• Responsible for detailed data recording and observation, experiment planning, and results analysis
• Determine types of tests to be performed, approves or suggests modifications to testing equipment, and analyzes test results to evaluate the performance of developed products or equipment

Senior Industrial Engineer

Materials Handler

Responsible for performing the physical or administrative tasks involved in the shipping, receiving, storing, and distributing of products, materials, parts, supplies and equipment. The qualified candidate unpacks and checks goods received against purchase orders or invoices, maintains records of received goods, rejecting unsatisfactory items where necessary. May lift heavy items and may operate a forklift. Prepares and maintains records of merchandise shipped. Posts weights and shipping charges and prepares goods for final shipment. Examines, stocks and distributes materials in inventory and on manufacturing lines. May prepare kitting packages for assembly production.

Engineering Program Manager

The Engineering Program Manager will work closely with each of the engineering efforts – mechanical, product development, process, etc.  Responsibilities will include facilitating communication and coordination of efforts both within the Development Team and between Development and Production. The ideal candidate will have at least 20 years of experience in engineering and engineering management. Technical expertise in vacuum deposition is highly desired. Experience in flat panel, hard disk, or semiconductor industries will be valued. The role, while focused on program management, may include systems engineering and vendor management duties.

Senior Process Engineer - Chemical Bath Deposition

This Senior Process Engineer is responsible for the implementation of an automated, large-scale Chemical Bath Deposition (CBD) manufacturing process for DayStar’s high-volume, thin-film solar module factory. 

Primary Responsibilities:

• Work with the Development team to define technical requirements and program milestones for implementation of large-scale CBD manufacturing processes;
• Define and establish product flow, standard operational procedures, and equipment specifications for selected CBD processes;
• Select and qualify materials and equipment for production processes to meet quality, reliability, cost, yield, productivity and manufacturability requirements;
• Carry out process scale-up, improve process tool performance, define sustaining operations, define equipment maintenance procedures, and provide mentorship to technicians;
• Plan and conduct experiments to fully characterize the production process throughout the development cycle;
• Drive continuous improvement activities related to product quality, reliability, cost, yield, process stability and/or capability, productivity and safety and/or ergonomic over variables such as material, method, equipment, environment and operational personnel;

Substrate Engineer

The Substrate Engineer is responsible for surface preparation, materials development, post processing cleaning operations, and defect characterization of 0.7m² glass substrates for DayStar’s high volume thin film solar module factory. Additional responsibilities will include vendor selection, specification development, process development, and equipment installation and de-bug in a fast paced start up environment.

• Develop, evaluate, and implement glass substrate cleaning and drying processes, including chemistry and equipment configuration.
• Evaluate and optimize storage conditions and handling techniques for cleaned substrates.
• Work with Development team to evaluate glass suppliers and develop specifications for composition, defect levels and criteria, dimensions, and contamination.
• Evaluate and implement optical inspection and other tools to characterize both incoming and processed substrates.  Define and continually improve/optimize accept/reject criteria.
• Develop and evaluate surface and edge treatments to provide consistent surfaces for subsequent vacuum deposition processes.
• Evaluate and select techniques and equipment for laser barcode engraving of glass substrates.
• Drive subsequent continuous improvement activities for substrate IQC and preparation processes.

The Senior Electrical Engineer will be responsible for the design of dynamic and static devices at the system, sub-system, and component level. Emphasis will be on vacuum deposition systems for thin films.

Planning projects, creating and tracking schedules, and coordinating tasks with other in-house and external resources will be included in the daily work. Designing to cost targets will be critical.

While the focus of the work will be mechanical, knowledge and awareness of gas and liquid flow, electrical and computer control systems, and a general understanding of the electro-mechanical systems is expected.

Responsibilities other than design work will include vendor interaction, selection, and management, extensive interfacing with a design team, construction and operation of equipment, significant knowledge of deposition processes, having and using the flexibility to design, build, troubleshoot, and use vacuum deposition equipment.

The Director of Back End Equipment Engineering will be responsible for selection, installation and maintenance of all Back End production tooling in Daystar’s photovoltaic module factory. The candidate must have at least 10 years of hands-on experience in successful specification, installation, and optimization of assembly systems used by semiconductor, solar, hard disk or flat panel display industries. The candidate must have a proven track record and specific technical expertise over a wide range of engineering disciplines required by complex fabrication systems. The candidate must possess excellent engineering management skills, both in building and managing a highly effective engineering team.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Direct activities of the Back End Equipment Engineering team:
• Lead equipment specification, selection/design, procurement, start-up, and production ramp activities for new factory.
• Includes equipment for contacts, lay-up, lamination and test operations
• Maintenance responsibilities for production equipment in support of plant requirements for yield, uptime, and throughput.
• Work with technology development and manufacturing teams to provide inputs which will streamline the technology development and transfer to manufacturing so that product development efforts address the essential requirements to ensure timely transition to volume manufacturing.
• Recommend & implement appropriate changes in fabrication tools and processes to improve the overall product performance and manufacturing cost.
• Lead teams in productivity improvement projects.
• May perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• B.S. degree (M.S. degree preferred) in an appropriate engineering field.
• 10+ years of equipment engineering experience.
• 7+ years supervisory/management experience.
• Goal-driven & hands-on leader; must be detail-oriented, time- and cost-conscious, technical expert/manager.
• Must possess an exceptional level of team building and project management skills, and the competence to direct the varying elements of project and personnel demands that drive a successful technology company forward.
• A motivator & a day-to-day, 'nuts and bolts' engineer.
• Knowledge of systems and software necessary to perform specific job function such as MS Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, MS Project, Flowcharting, Solidworks, Autocad.
